Early Years (1939)
In 1939, Sol Miller began auctioning livestock and selling various goods. Sol added an egg auction and started renting spaces outside the livestock sale barn for people to set up and sell their goods. This informal outdoor market paved the way for an expansive indoor/outdoor marketplace.
Expansion and Growth (1966)
After Sol's death, his son Howard and his wife, Sarah, took up the mantle, continuing to run the auction barn and flea market. With the patronage of the community, they purchased a plot of land for the Hartville Flea Market, where it operated until 2002, when it moved to its present site. The market, a testament to the community's spirit, gained popularity, offering a wide range of unique products, from antiques to garage sale treasures and fresh produce.
Relocation (2002)
As the market continued to flourish, it demonstrated its ability to adapt and innovate. In 2002, the Hartville MarketPlace & Flea Market moved to its current location at 1289 Edison Street NW in Hartville, Ohio. The new indoor/outdoor facility, a testament to the market's ability to evolve, was intentionally designed to provide a family-friendly shopping and dining experience. It features outdoor vendors selling antiques, collectibles, plants, and produce and a temperature-controlled indoor space offering everything from fashion apparel to garden accessories and Amish Furniture of Ohio.
Modern Times (2000's - Present)
Since the relocation, the Hartville MarketPlace & Flea Market has remained a vibrant space for bargain hunters, treasure seekers, and those that embrace shopping local. The market continues to be operated by fourth-generation family members, who are dedicated to preserving its timeless charm and appeal. The MarketPlace hosts various events throughout the year, including coin shows, car shows, craft shows and seasonal celebrations. The market is not just a destination for shopping; it is a safe gathering spot for the community, fostering a sense of local heritage and tradition.
